LEGENDS OF THE WEST

STORY BY BRET BRADIGAN

At first there was no strategy, no plan, just curiosity. On that clear day in September 2018, Shane Harris saw Bureau of Land Management’s corral in Ridgecrest with mustangs snorting and pacing in the warm Mojave Desert air. He was a goner. “They were so beautiful! What was I going to do? Just leave them there? I didn’t know what to expect when I got there. There’s hundreds and hundreds of horses and that just kind of broke my heart. I was like, ‘This is crazy!’ I wanted to take them all home … it was bigger than what I thought. I wanted to save all these horses,” Harris said. “I went for one and came back with three.”  - OQ/Winter 2022-23

Our Story

American Legend Mustang is a tax exempt 501(c)3 California Nonprofit Corporation Tax Exempt # 83-2895868. Located in Ojai, California on a 24 acre family owned ranch. What started as an idea of Shane and Aaron Harris and trainer Bruce Siben later became established in September 2018. We then began rescuing our wild mustangs and with the vision of giving back to the local and surrounding communities through education, public events, programs and fundraising. Our goal is to show what great companions wild mustang horses can be. We rescue wild mustangs from the United States Bureau of Land Management, then we proceed to gentle, train and socialize the mustangs using techniques of natural horsemanship from our trainers Bruce Siben and Samantha Record, then moving forward with placing them into our lease to own program and finding their forever homes or they are placed in our ambassador herd used for visitor experiences, therapeutic programs, veteran program, work experience program.

Due to the pandemic the Bureau of Land Management shut down American Legend took a hiatus. Fast forward to 2022 with ranch renovation booming and creating a new foundation American Legend Mustang will resume working towards saving, gentling, and adopting out wild horses!! Check back for updates as we work towards Keeping the American Legend Alive!

Making a Difference

Working to give Wild Mustangs their purpose!

American Legend Mustang is in the business of changing and shaping lives. The work we do is aimed at providing a one of a kind hands on experience for volunteers, visitors and the public in surrounding communities alike. In the best of all worlds we would leave theses horses running wild but due to limited natural resources and overpopulation wild horses continue to be rounded up. American Legend Mustang focuses our efforts on rescuing, educating the public, and helping our wild horses adjust to domesticated life. We make sure our partners are empowered by creating opportunities for individuals that want to experience a true old western relic.

“You occasionally see one [wild mustang], and it’s the thrill of a lifetime. But mostly all you ever see is a cloud of dust after they are gone. It’s their stubborn ability to survive that makes them so remarkable.”

— Velma “Wild Horse Annie” Johnston
